So, I figure, I'll try and get a discussion going, try to get some activity stirred up, if nothing else.Anyone here collect, paint, and/or play games with miniatures? Be it Warhammer, 40k, Lord of the Rings, Warmachine, Rackham's AT-43 or Confrontation games, or any other such examples? Myself, I play Warhammer 40k (Tau and Space Marines), and Confrontation. I got pulled into 40k by the opportunity to make FUN of the game, is the thing about it all that's silly....I set out to ridicule it (and still do, sometimes!), and now I'm having fun just building and painting the models. Confrontation, the models came into my heart FIRST (they were flippin' gorgeous when I first heard of the game, and the minis were lead-based pewter), and I've been pulled into the game (playing Wolfen) from there. Meanwhile, I collect and paint some of the Cygnar models from Warmachine, just because they're shiny and pretty. IP: 96.241.154.72 |

I haven't played board games that much but I do build models, mainly of the Radio controlled type (Airplanes, Helicopters, and Cars) However I have recently started building plastic models mainly airplanes and vintage dragsters. the largest model i've built to date was my old Yellow Aircraft P-38 Lightning which i built back in 1995 which had 119" wing span and was powered by 2 35cc two stroke engines unfortunately I lost that model to a crash back in 03 when the linkage controlling the elevator (makes it go up and down) failed and it plowed into the ground destroying everything except one of the engines >.<. I still have that engine and infact still have yet to remove the broken prop from it. Took me a year to build that airplane *Brings back memories* anyway take care (HOTROD)By the way, on the subject of board games, I've recently become interested into getting onto one of the board game types which is the easiest to learn? Well, the Miniatures games don't exactly use BOARDS per se, so much as entire tables. Offhand, I would say that Warhammer 40k is an easy one to pick up, simply because all you really have to do is find your local Games Workshop store, and the clerks and other gamers will leap at the chance to teach you how to play (sometimes literally). It's a good hobby to get out of the house and be social with other geeks, really. The games are somewhat expensive in the long run (it'll take most people about a year or so to build most of an army), but unlike some addictions, you actually have a siny pile of little plastic and pewter men to show for it, and a sense of accomplishment over the fact. That, and some fun stories of silly things that happen in the games. IP: 96.231.164.75 |

Is the gameplay kinda like Dungeons and Dragons, or is it kinda like army men? I would appreciate some clarification....------------------ Serving the RR fandom since 2000. IP: 24.115.67.17 |

I tend to describe it as "chess on steroids". You move squads of miniatures across a table, and their equipment lets them do "stuff". In some cases, this means leaping an extra six inches while moving. Sometimes this means shooting with a gun, or spraying the enemy with a flamethrower. Sometimes this means charging in with a chainsaw sword to hack the other player's guys to bits. Movement is in inches, as well as the weapons' ranges. Dice, the standard six-sided variety, determine how effective you are at the above tasks. You want to roll high, and to roll lots, to kill as many models on the opponent's army as you can, lest on their turn they get to shoot BACK. Meanwhile, you also have tanks, fortified buildings in some cases, and in the REALLY big games, the occasional giant robot. IP: 96.231.164.75 |

Ahhh thank ya kindly, I was wondering how involved it was. and as far as cost is concerned it can't cost more than I had in my P-38 which was around $9700.00 at the time I built it. Another concern I have however is finding a local Game room where I live. I have to drive 20 miles one way just to go to the store and i'm not sure if the town that contains said store has such a place (HOTROD)------------------ The only way to travel is in a straight line (By me) IP: 98.80.183.32 |

games workshop's website should have a nice little directory in it, it'll show you where the nearest store, or at least, where the nearest affiliated store is, in your state. But yeah, having nowhere to play and not much for people to play with can be aggrivating. I mean, getting the models is still no problem, you can order the stuff online! You just can't play onlineIP: 96.231.164.75 |
